Fontanería is a very specific skill and cannot be accomplished by everyone. Hiring a Fontanero is usually a relatively expensive process but when there is a big Fontanería job to be done then you have no choice but to call in a professional. If the job is relatively small and if you have the right instructions then you can take on the project yourself and save a little money on labor. Fixing a leaky faucet is such a task.

The first task to complete when fixing the faucet is to take a careful look at it. When you go down to the hardware store to get a replacement cartridge you need to be particular so that you don’t buy the wrong equipment. Once you have bought the new cartridge you need to assemble some basic tools – screwdrivers and Allen wrenches.

Now that you have all the necessary items handy you can start fixing the faucet. Before you start unscrewing or fixing anything Fontanería related you must remember to shut off the main water supply to the pipe. Once that is done, use the screwdriver or a wrench to loosen the handle. Once the handle is removed you will observe the cartridge along with its threaded or clipped hold down. You need to remove the clip and pull out the faulty cartridge.

Now all you have to do is replace the new cartridge. But you must be very careful of the o-rings. The dripping is because of the damage done to these rings so you must not damage them in the new ones inadvertently. You can screw on the handle and the job is done.

For little tasks, like I’ve mentioned above, there is no real need for a Fontanero but unless you are very handy with the tools do not attempt to take on tasks any bigger than this.
